Letter to a Skeptic — HS Senior*

* This assignment was done in connection with our Senior Honors English Class who were asked to write a letter addressing the issues in Timothy Keller’s book Making Sense of God

Being part of the human journey is oftentimes tiresome and relatively depressing. The most difficult part is trying to find a purpose in the absurdity of life. Trying to determine how valid religion is can seem like an uphill battle, but maybe in reality it’s more simple than it seems! You’ve already experienced a spiritual conviction, yet you don’t believe in a God? That is a simply another example of the world outside of scientific fact. Paul Kalanthi, an atheist, has determined that there is “no scientific proof for the reality of meaning and virtue” which he believes in. There’s nowhere else for that sort of concept outside the spiritual realm. I can understand why you wouldn’t want to get tied up in the religious dogma, but shouldn’t conviction outweigh those restrictions? If you believe in the greater good, which I know you do, then you might as well take that next step into religious commitment. It offers a fulfilling life of purpose and direction, not the uncertainty you have been subjected to. I understand you seek something greater than yourself and that greater being is faith in God.
