Back Row L-R: Ed Eerkes, owner of Star Mercantile. I am certain memories of that store span at least two generations; it was where a clothing store is located today. Herman Oordt, pioneer Lynden chicken farmer, the first hatchery in the state to use electricity on a large scale. His two sons continued the hatchery and egg farming across from the fairground, what is now Fairway Center. Sam Stuurmans, early Lynden farmer and later clothing store owner. Thomas Heeringa, longtime Lynden farmer
Front Row L-R: Guy Dyk, Lynden contractor, and builder of Dyk Building in downtown Lynden. Rev. Abel J. Brink, early Lynden pastor. D.J. Zylstra, Lynden entrepreneur who ran a boarding house on East Front Street and later sold real estate and insurance.

This photo, of the very first school board, was taken circa 1912 when Lynden Christian School was still very young. The school was incorporated in 1910. When we published this photo it generated a wonderful response from the ancestors of these board members. These men were remembered with fondness for their dedication and love for this new school.

The school began in a newly built two room schoolhouse with a teaching principal, Mrs. Ruby Hanover Elenbaas, and one teacher, Mrs. Dena Haveman DeYoung. The first years' enrollment of 72 students was only the beginning!

Maxine (Te Selle) Greidanus '58 states that the year is around 1912 and a couple of the board members were absent. Her grandfather, Guy Dyk, is in the picture. Mrs. Lorna (Heeringa) Brown pointed out her grandfather, Thomas Heeringa in the back row. Other submissions by Martin Oordt '56, grandson of Herman Oodt and Kaye (Eerkes) Sturgeon '61, whose grandfather, Ed Eerkes, also proved very helpful.
