When school is in session, all students are expected to be in school. Students should be in school on a regular basis, keeping absences to a minimum. Illness, injury, doctor appointments, and family emergencies are legitimate excused absences. All other activities should be scheduled outside of school hours or during normal holiday and vacation times.
Please see pages 32 - 36 in the
High School Student Handbook (pdf) a more complete articulation of the school policies regarding excused and unexcused absences, tardies and detention.
If your child is ill, please call the high school Attendance Secretary, Mrs. Karrin Simpson, before 9:30 a.m. The attendance phone number is 354-4828.
There are three categories of absences: Excused, Unexcused, and Permitted.
Excused Absences
Excused absences include illness, doctor's appointment, funeral, or a family emergency. When possible excused absences should be arranged in advance with a note or call from the parents to the attendance secretary.
The student will be given opportunity to make up work missed, though it is the student's responsibility to initiate and make arrangements for the work. If a student is to leave campus for an appointment, they must first check out with the high school office. The school is not comfortable in releasing students from our supervision unless the parents know about it.
Unexcused Absences
Any absence from an academic class, study hall, lunch, homeroom, chapel, detention or other assigned place without prior notification and authorization by the parent is an unexcused absence.
Permitted Absences
This type of absence requires a Permitted Absence Form. The parents and student must arrange these absences in advance. Students must have all of their teachers' signatures and have made arrangements for homework. This form is then given to the Attendance Secretary for administrative approval.
